Attacks in Public Places

Staying Safe in Public Places

  • Stay Vigilant: Always be aware of your surroundings. Report any suspicious activities or individuals to authorities immediately.

  • Know the Exits: Familiarize yourself with the layout of public places, including exits and potential escape routes.

  • Have a Plan: Develop an evacuation or sheltering plan for different types of attacks, such as active shooters or bomb threats.

During an Attack

  • Follow Instructions: Listen to law enforcement and follow their instructions without hesitation.

  • Run, Hide, Fight: If you encounter an active shooter, remember the Run, Hide, Fight protocol:

    • Run: If there is an accessible escape path, attempt to evacuate the premises.

    • Hide: If evacuation is not possible, find a place to hide where the attacker is less likely to find you.

    • Fight: As a last resort, and only if your life is in imminent danger, attempt to incapacitate the attacker.

  • Communicate: Use your phone to call 911 when it is safe to do so. Provide as much information as possible about your location and the situation.

After an Attack

  • Stay Calm: Keep calm and follow instructions from emergency responders.

  • Help Others: If it is safe, assist those who are injured or in need of help.

  • Stay Informed: Listen to official updates from authorities and follow their guidance on when it is safe to leave the area.

By staying vigilant, having a plan, and knowing how to respond, you can increase your chances of staying safe during attacks in public places.
